Reopening St. Monica Catholic School

Dear Crusader Families,

On Monday, I told you to expect an update the week of September 21, and surprise, I have got fantastic news for you today! King County’s current COVID-infection numbers have been trending in a very healthy direction, and our school can now choose to reopen for in-person instruction in grades K-8!

As you recall, I announced via email/communique on August 10, “Archdiocesan Catholic schools will be following the guidance from Governor Inslee’s office…Archdiocesan Catholic elementary schools (which includes K-8 schools) in high-risk counties will start the fall with remote learning.” This decision was based on the published Washington Department of Health Decision Tree.

Now that we are reaching 14 straight days of 75 or fewer COVID-cases per 100,000 of the county population, the Archdiocese allows individual Catholic schools to choose when they each will reopen for in-person instruction for grades K-5 and then grades 6-8.

At St. Monica, we are thrilled to be able to bring back grades K-5 for in-person learning from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm (2:15 pm dismissal on Weds) beginning Monday, September 28th! Our preschoolers have been in school in the Early Learning Center classroom since September 1st and all is going well. Grades 6-8 will continue their daily remote lessons for two additional weeks as a safety precaution and then return for in-person learning on Monday, October 12th. The faculty and I can hardly wait for our school community to be entirely on campus!

Please note that next week, since it is our MAP testing week, we will continue with our previously planned “House” schedule. See the schedule below. Additionally, the grade K-8 teachers and instructional assistants will need time to prepare for our first day of in-person learning, including setting up the classrooms. Therefore, all grade K-8 remote classes will are canceled next Friday, September 25. We apologize for any conflict this creates with this sudden calendar change.

For any parents concerned with their children returning to in-person learning starting on September 28 (K-5) or on October 12 (6-8), teachers will continue to offer remote learning. At the same time, they teach in-person to the majority of their students. Please note that parents of grade K-8 students who will be choosing NOT to have their children return to in-person learning will need to inform their child’s homeroom teacher and the school office by no later than Wednesday, September 23. Our teachers have plans to continue the same excellent instruction and needs of students who choose to stay home indefinitely for online learning.

Please see our Reopening St. Monica Plan. This plan addresses everything for when we reopen the K-8 classes with in-person learning, including how we will be handling physical distancing and mask-wearing with your children, lunch, recess, and arrival/dismissal procedures. Online-learning will continue for those whose family situations do not allow them to return to school just yet.
